Midnight

Writer's picture: Crystal YarboroughCrystal Yarborough

There's something about the sound of crickets chirping in the dead of night

With the ground cold and untouched

With all the animals sleeping

Gathering energy for the next day to come

Sensing the calmness of the Earth

For just a moment

It speaks to me

It tells me

That right here

Right now

These are the moments we remember

This is the feeling that we live for

Hoping to find ourselves outside of the chaos

Hoping to have a sense of security

And for the first time in our troubled lives we can breathe in relaxation

We create art

We are art

All because the dead of night relieves us

Have you ever stayed up all night just to see the moon reach the highest point in the sky? Or stay up late and walk outside and feel the fresh grass caress your toes? Have you just stepped outside to make a wish on a star? Maybe you’ve gone outside when it felt like everything in life was so cluttered that if you couldn’t find just a single moment of peace you’d explode. I feel so relieved after sensing the stillness of night. Living out in the country is the best when it becomes night. At night the streets aren’t busy, it feels like you’re on the Earth by yourself. It’s just you and the chirp of crickets talking to each other with cicadas joining in to add to the sound of nature. The chirp of the cricket gives you a tune that’s used to lull you back to sleep. Everything is so peaceful. At night is when I feel the most motivated to do anything. This is what inspired Midnight Hour. A clear sky brought out inspiration in me. The stillness brought peace into my life. Thanks to the night I was able to process emotions that had bounced around the place. There have been times where I couldn’t figure out how to breathe, yet the wind blew and the trees gave me rhythm to follow. Even if it was just for a few minutes before I was lulled back to sleep, I was secure, under a sky full of stars and hope. The two lines “We create art, we are art” is for the night owls who paint, sing, draw, anyone who has the most creative ability when the moon rises and the sun sets. “We are art” means that we are the galaxy. We are the shooting stars. We may create art but at the end of it all that art came from a part of us, we are the art that we create.
